Coney Island will play host to the First Annual Parachute Literary and Performance Festival, a two day celebration of poetry, prose, spoken word, and artistic expression. The free events (starting at 6:30pm each evening) will be held in two locations: The New York Aquarium’s Alien Stingers Exhibit, and the Coney Island Library.
Looking for a good free show to fill in the evening’s schedule? Take the long trek out to Asser Levy Park — it’ll be worth it. Blondie, Pat Benatar and The Donnas are slated to take the stage tomorrow night at Brooklyn’s own Seaside Summer Concert Series.
We did a few previous posts on the Coney Island Flea by the Sea flea market — the one that was supposed to add some color to the crumbling mess that is Joe Sitt’s playground. While they had a decent run for about two weeks, it looks as if the bottom has once again fallen out. They’ve succeeded in screwing up yet another thing that actually had some potential to do well and help revitalize the neighborhood.
One of our readers, Linda, shot us over these recent photos from the Coney Island Flea Market. As you can all see for yourselves, it looks far better than what we posted a few weeks back. Bright, colorful tents are now adorning the stale metal poles that were there before and they’ve signed up way more vendors to round the whole thing out. We gotta say, it looks good.
“Music just ain’t what it used to be!” If you can relate to the sentiment, if you agree that today’s Top 40 is filled with the aural equivalent of sludge, Coney Island is the place to be Thursday, July 23rd at 7:30PM as Gladys Knight and The O’Jays plan to bring a dose of cool soul on a warm summer evening to Asser Levy Park.
A few weeks ago, I decided to spend my Saturday afternoon in Coney Island enjoying the first traces of summer: eating hotdogs, enjoying the boardwalk, and – one of my favorite pastimes – browsing the ginormous flea market that was supposed to be set up there. But I was met with huge, aching disappointment.
Anyone that’s taken a trip to Brooklyn’s southern shore this spring has realized just how far Coney Island has fallen thanks to the villainy of “developer” Thor Equities and suspiciously major negotiation muck ups by the city. Astroland has been razed and Thor’s banners populate the ocean-side amusement area. [More...]
Still there is a flower blooming from the muck–the Village Voice’s Siren Music Festival returns for another free, all-day rock-a-thon on Saturday, July 18th.
Your home is a goldmine. I’m not referring to property value; I’m speaking of the loads of useless crap about the home (unused books, movies, videogames, clothing, and other miscellaneous items) that potential buyers are more than willing to drop a few bucks on–if you’re willing to part with it.
Dreamland Roller Rink has played host to many bright and cheery skate parties, but this weekend Lola Staar and her creepy compatriots, Cha Cha’s and Captain Bob, team up to take ghouls and girls on a walk on the wild side with Coney Island Day of the Dead Extravaganza.
In our first installment of Neighborhood Watch, we turned an eye toward Bed-Stuy, one of Brooklyn’s up and coming hotspots. It’s attracting many young, hip residents who wish to partake in the (relatively) cheap rents, gorgeous brownstones, outdoor eateries, and other amenities.
