Memorial Day sales’ is one of the top searches on Yahoo! this week, and with this economy there’s no doubt why shoppers are scouring the ‘net for a good deal this holiday weekend. Personally, I’ve been saving my pennies in hopes of buying a Canon PowerShot.  I don’t mind fighting the crowds in order to get this baby at the cheapest price possible.  Luckily you don’t need to have flashbacks of the Christmas Elmo insanity and face the trembling masses in person — you can hide safely at home behind your computer.

For the ladies, now is the time to buy that bathing suit you’ve been dreading to get, so check out Macy’s or Land’s End for the best deals.  6pm.com has some great deals on shoes right now, but if you can’t find what you want, Piperlime is also offering some pretty sweet deals this weekend. Ann Taylor Loft is holding a $25 and under sale, and Banana Republic just recently slashed a lot of their stock to under $30.

For the guys, now is the time to stock up on that sneaker collection. Adidas has a Memorial Day coupon (use the coupon code: MEMDAY) that could get you up to $30 off your purchase.  Nike will also be getting rid of a lot of their stock through their clearance items, slashing up to 75 percent off.  Dockers is marking their duds down by 75 percent and Perry Ellis is taking an extra 50 percent off as well.

Department stores always win out when it comes to the best sales during the holidays, so be sure to check out some of the favorites like Macy’s and Nordstrom,  who is offering 33 percent or more off of their products.  Other chains like Kohls and Kmart are having two day sales that could score up to 80 percent off purchases.

And, if you’re looking to land some cheap electronics, be sure to head over to Best Buy or Overstock and do some comparison pricing before you take the plunge with the credit card.

Besides checking out the hot sales this weekend, many are also on the prowl for some travel deals. According to Yahoo!, ground travel searches have spiked. Users are looking for road trips to celebrate the holiday weekend, with New Yorkers at the top of the list of people looking to get away. So while you may be able to get a good last minute travel deal, expect serious traffic and crowded trains.

Searches for “luau party” are also up this week. I’m still waiting for my invitation.
