Free Healthcare to Jobless and Uninsured at Walgreens

Jobless and uninsured after March 31, 2009?  A little bit of luck is coming your way.  Walgreens will be offering free treatment for certain types of illness: “respiratory problems, allergies, infections and skin conditions, among other ailments” to be exact.  Quest Diagnostics, a national lab operator, will be participating by offering free strep throat and urinary tract infection tests.

Now, this doesn’t pay for prescriptions — only tests and routine treatment from its Take Care walk-in clinics.  But according to Yahoo News, these treatments are typically priced around $59.

Walgreens clinics are planning for this offer to run until the end of 2009.

As is the case with any free offer, there are a few regulations:

  • Free services will be offered only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • This offer does not include free checkups, vaccinations or other injections.
  • Patients must present proof they are unemployed by providing a federal or state unemployment determination letter and an unemployment check stub.
  • They will have to sign a form at the clinic saying they have lost their jobs and health benefits.
  • If they find a new job or get new health insurance, they will no longer be eligible for free care.
  • Spouses and children are also eligible for free care if they are also uninsured.
