A few months ago we took a look at RightRides, a free, volnteer-run car service that drops off women, homosexuals, and transexuals to their doorsteps within select New York City neighborhoods during the afterhours. This time we’re taking a look at another unique car service, Dollar Van Demos, which aims to bring a smile to your face as you cruise through Brooklyn.
For those not in the know, dollar vans are vans (some regulated by the TLC, many that aren’t) that cruise up the major north/south strips (think Flatbush and Nostrand Aves) that cut through Flatbush. Back in the day, you could hop in a dollar van at Empire Blvd and arrive at Kings Plaza in about 15 minutes–far faster than public transportation. I should mention that’s because many of the drivers would be right at home in the Indy 500, but that would insinuate that they are reckless drivers; I prefer the term adventurous. As the name suggests, the cost of a ride was just a buck.
Over the years dollar cab prices have gone up to as high as $2 in some areas (although $1.50 are far more common), but the biggest change, courtesy of Dollar Van Demos, is the addition of entertainment. Previously, a passenger was able to enjoy the fine (recorded) sounds of the Caribbean while coasting toward Kings Plaza, but DVD is bringing the ruckus with live music and entertainment. Peep the vocal stylings of Leeia Music:
Not only are singers riding along for your merriment, but rappers, and comedians. No word yet if there are any tips involved–frankly, we’d be shocked if there isn’t–but Dollar Van Demos looks to bring a little extra sunshine to your cross-borough ride. Check ‘em out the next time you need to get up or down the Ave quickly.
