A Perfect Day for Freebies: Museum Mile
June 9, 2009 by Lauren Fairbanks

Looking for something to do to while away the dreariness that is today’s weather? Head over to the Museum Mile after work today to get into many of NYC’s museums on the 5th Avenue strip for free. Note: This is a perfect time to check out the Guggenheim and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum for nothing without having to go at awkward times or pay upwards of $15 for a ticket.
From The Gothamist:
There’s an opening ceremony at the Guggenheim (Fifth at 89th Street) at 5:45 p.m. and the festival is open 6 p.m. through 9 p.m., rain or shine, with live bands, street performers and “art in the street” activities. Plus, the website says, “Plus, follow the mile with street muralist De La Vega – grab a piece of chalk and make your mark!”
The museums that are participating are:
- El Museo del Barrio
- Museum of the City of New York
- The Jewish Museum
- Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum
- Smithsonian Institution
- National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts
- Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
- Neue Galerie New York
- Goethe – Institut/German Cultural Center
- Metropolitan Museum of Art
Can’t make it out today? Check out our comprehensive list of free and suggested donation museums in NYC, broken down by borough.
