The 5 Best Free iPhone and iPod touch Apps: Part Deux
March 11, 2009 by Jeffrey L. Wilson

The runaway success of the iPhone (and to a lesser extent, the iPod touch) has opened the floodgates for developers both large and small to create incredibly useful and wildly entertaining programs. Unfortunately, the sheer number of apps available means wading through the crap to find the gems–which is where we step in. We’ve dug through the slush to recommend a handful of the best free iPhone and iPod touch applications available. Here are some of our favorites.
Bloomberg
Watching the stock market continually sink into the abyss is enough to make one want to make like an ostrich and plant head completely into the sand. However, bucking up and riding out this wave is essential, so we recommend installing Bloomberg for keeping a careful eye on your investments. Not only do you get the various pluses and minuses of the market, but news links are provided to keep you on top of Wall Street’s actions.
Google Earth
Tight financial times mean reeling in miscellaneous spending–like the dream vacation to Cairo you’ve been longing to take. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t check out one of Egypt’s gems; Google lets you check out the desert city (as well as virtually every other location on the planet) with this dyanmo of an application that lets you globetrot without denting the wallet.
Kindle for iPhone
If the Kindle 2 is on your wishlist, but you don’t want to shell out $359 for the popular e-book reader, Amazon serves up a sound alternative with Kindle for iPhone. The device syncs up to Amazon’s servers to allow you read the first chapter of a book to see if it’s worth the coin, and buy e-books over the air—no Mac or PC required.
Slacker for iPhone
It’s no secret that the LifeStyler crew totally digs on Slacker Internet Radio, so we were psyched when it made the jump from the Web to the iPhone and iPod touch. As with the Web-based app and Slacker Portable G2, you get an unlimited supply of free tunes, and if you already have an account, Slacker for iPhone will pull in your user-created stations, as well as your customized settings.
Twitterfon
Are you on Twitter, the addictive mico-blogging site that gives you 140 characters to make a statement to the world? If so, you can now spread your messages to the world from your handset. Twitterfon is certainly one of the better free Twitter apps, as it has a sleek, easy-to-use interface and allows your to easily Tweet and retweet. Both Lauren and I have Twitter accounts, so feel free to follow us for some of the behind-the-scenes LifeStyler info.
