Green Shops

Making your home an eco-friendly one may sound like a difficult and expensive task. But a new wave of “green” home stores has made it affordable and easy to be good to our planet. Utilizing bamboo (which grows at a surprisingly fast rate) instead of trees for furniture and utensils, selling linens made from organic, chemical-free cotton, and reusing and refurbishing salvaged wood and plastic are just some of the ways these stores are helping us save our planet while styling our homes. Check out some of these awesome NYC based stores to turn your home into a “green” one.

Furnish Green
1261 Broadway (between 31st and 32nd St.)
Suite 512
New York, NY 10001
www.furnishgreen.org

Furnish Green sells a slew of refurbished furniture that save the earth trees and you money. From vintage tables to spruced up IKEA filing cabinets, Furnish Green is dedicated to rescuing and refurbishing furniture that can be resold. So instead of buying that latest end table from your Pier 1 catalogue, why not save a tree and buy something that’s already been used.

Side Note: Check out Furnish Green’s MOFO sale. They’re trying to move out pieces that are currently in the store, and at great prices. They’re selling an awesome end table that opens (great for storage) for only $43 — a fraction of its original price tag of $112.

Green Depot
222 Bowery
New York, NY 10012
www.greendepot.com

Green depot has everything for your green needs. From non VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints to bio-degradable cleaning solutions and recycled glassware, it’s easy to make your home eco-friendly. Unlike a lot of everyday household cleaners, which degrade into oxygen-reducing substances, Green depot’s all-purpose cleaners are plant-derived, biodegradable and work just as well. They even have their own line of paint sans VOCs which can cause an array of problems like liver and kidney damage.  Prices typically range from $5to $10.

If it’s furnishings you’re look for, try their recycled glassware made form reclaimed wine bottles or their bamboo soil clock which doesn’t require any batteries or outlet – sort of like that potato clock science project you did in 5th grade.

3R Living
276L Fifth Avenue (Between Garfield Place and First Street)
Brooklyn, NY 11215
www.3rliving.com

“Reuse, Reduce, Recycle” is the mantra of this store. Their bamboo flatware set is an earth-conscious and stylish way to have your dinner. Bamboo grows extremely quickly, and can replenish itself in a matter of months. It is a sturdy and useful alternative to trees, which can take up to hundreds of years to replenish. They also have an array of bed and bath accessories, cleaning products and even clothing.

Organic Avenue
101 Stanton St.
New York, NY 10002
43 Eight Ave
New York, NY 10002

Organic Avenue has great accessories for your home that don’t harm our environment. Their Ahimsa Peace Silk is used to make napkins, placemats and rugs. The silk is spun from the cocoons of already emerged silk moths in India. The pupae are never killed to obtain the silk. While you’re there, also check out their extensive line of beauty and pharmaceutical products.
