As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. You can probably think of many areas in your life where a little bit of practice could make all the difference, but what about your job seeking skills? Everyone, young and old, could use some advice on today’s job market and a fresh set of eyes on your resume probably couldn’t hurt.
The New York Public Library (NYPL) opened a resources center aimed to help out the unemployed or those looking for work in the Big Apple. Named the “Job Search Central”, users can access 11 computers loaded with resume templates, plus nearly 8,000 books on how to snag the perfect job.
From the press release:
In response to overwhelming demand by the public, The New York Public Library has launched JobSearch@NYPL, a campaign to ensure that every job-seeking New Yorker is connected to the technologies and information they need – for free. “The new Job Search Central, a state of the art space at the Science, Industry and Business Library, has opened to help job seekers from entry through executive levels,” said Library President Paul LeClerc. “Throughout our system we have added more than 1,000 career-related classes, from resume-writing workshops to networking seminars to computer skills sessions, and we have provided special training to at least one staff member in each of our 87 branches to help users with job search needs.”
The Job Search Central is located in the lower level of the Science, Industry and Business Library on Madison and 34th Street. Job seekers can also get one-on-one job coaching and career counseling or small business consultations, all free of charge.
While the idea of the Job Search Central is to aid any workers who aren’t used to the modern system of online applications, it can also be a great resource for anyone who is unemployed or looking for a change in career.
If you can’t stop by the center in midtown, you can sign up for one of the 1,000 career-related classes being offered at all the NYPL branches in Manhattan, Staten Island and The Bronx.
